Associations with certain HLA types and with antiendothelial antibodies have been found.

Microscopic : shows acute or chronic inflammatory infiltrates according to the duration of disease, thrombus occluding the lumen, recanalisation of thrombus at places, microabscesses and granuloma formation, and fibrosis.
